Commonwealth : Its significance
The Commonwealth is an Organisation where countries of various diverse backgrounds and economy have an equal opportunity for an amicable interaction with each other. The 2010 Commonwealth games is scheduled to be held in New Delhi the capital city of India. Basically the Commonwealth was designed to create an environment of economic versatility and solitude among member nations which also included the promotion of wellbeing , brotherhood, democracy and human rights.
Commonwealth Games Federation
The Commonwealth games is said to be a multinational sport event which is held in every four years. The Commonwealth games includes the participation of the glitterati athletes of the Member nations. The Commonwealth Games Federation also known as the (CGF) is the one that is responsible for the organisation of the Commonwealth games.
The 2010 Commonwealth games is scheduled to be held in New Delhi in India which commands a population of more than 13 million. Whereas the 2006 Commonwealth games was held in Melbourne with a population of 3.7 million.
Sneak Peak into the History of Commonwealth Games
The First Commonwealth games marked its commencement in the year 1930 as the British Empire games . There was a transition in the name to British Empire and Commonwealth games in the year 1954, to British Commonwealth games in the year 1978 and conjectured the present name of the Commonwealth games in the year 1978 itself.
Added to the Olympic Sports, there are certain games which are played only in the commonwealth countries such as that of lawn bowls, rugby sevens, and netball. Currently there are 53 Commonwealth nations and 71 collaborating countries.
The Commonwealth games marks the presence of approximately 5000 athletes which accomplishes it to be one of the largest International Sporting events .
History has its records the four countries which comprise up the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and the Northern Ireland) have send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games. Added to it separate teams are also sent from the British Crown Dependencies like Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of man.
Till Date the countries which have the reputation of attending all the commonwealth games consistently are Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales respectively.
Protocols being followed since its inception
Since the year 1930 through 1950 there has been a tradition known as the parade of nations which is led by a single flag bearer carrying the Union Flag of the British Nation which connoted the leading role of Britain in the British Empire. Therefore proving the affirmity a relay race of the athletes is conducted carrying a baton from the Buckinghum Palace to the venue of the opening ceremony. The baton has within itself the Queen's message of greeting the participating athletes. The Baton's final bearer is usually a very famous personality of the sports fraternity of the host country. The tradition of carrying the Queen's Baton is still in vogue in the host nations.
All the participating nations march in the English alphabetical order. Only with the exception of the host nation of the previous Game marching first while that of the host of the current games marching last.
Three National flags fly atop the poles that are used for the medal ceremonies viz Previous host nation, Current host nation, and the next host nation respectively.
Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010
The city of New Delhi is to host the Commonwealth games 2010. This in itself marks a majestic enthusiasm as it is the first time India is hosting the games and only the second time it is being held in Asia.
New Delhi with a teeming population of more than 13.5 million is the capital city of India and is rich in culture and history. Delhi stands in the western end of the Gangetic plain and is bordered by the States of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana on the eastern and the western half. Delhi in itself is famous for its souvenir of historic sites, British era Government buildings and the tree lined avenues.
Added to it lot many preparations are on for the accommodation and the hospitality of the Sports fraternity and the tourists coming from all over the world during these games.
The commonwealth games are going to start from the 3rd of October to the 14th October 2010 inclusive of the opening and the close down ceremony respectively.
Weather wise the city very well experiences a mean temperature of 17.2 degrees and a maximum of 31.3 degrees centigrade in October.
Total Face Lift of Delhi
The Delhi Commonwealth games site is to be constructed on a 40 acre site proposed to be built in the heart of the capital which would undertake the capacity of around 8500 athletes and officials. Existing and the new stadiums would be used to house the following sports as that of :
Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Bowls, EAD events, Cycling, Hockey, Gymnastics, Netball, Shooting, Rugby 7, Squash, Weightlifting, Table Tennis.
Delhi got the Opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games 2010 by defeating its Canadian City Compatriot Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the which was held at the CGF General Assembly held in the Montego Bay in November 2003.
